Creatively Uncommon: Volume 2

We here at Vocoid haven't put up any new material for a while so I thought I'd put together another compilation of fantastic free music that other artists are making. When we were working on the original Creatively Uncommon compilation the scene was much different. I ended up tracking down artists on myspace and asking them to if they'd be willing to put one or more of their tracks under a creative commons license so I could use it for the project. Now there are many new sources for material put out under a user friendly license which makes this kind of thing much easier. I'd like to thank the folks at freemusicarchive.org, which is the exclusive source for the following tracks. I hope you all enjoy this mix!

Medling Again is finally here

I know I promised this a LONG time ago (seriously, about 9 mos.) and then completely dropped the ball on it, but at long last, I've posted a "Release" for Medling Again. Basically, I added meta-data. That's right, it took me 9 mos. to add m3u tags! Actually, there were extenuating circumstances regarding the late release, but that's neither here nor there, and I want to heartily apologize the the contributors for not getting this out sooner. Thanks to everyone who took the time to participate in this remix. Look at it this way.. it's almost like a double promotion at this point. Anyway, check it out if you haven't already:

The album is part goth disco, part glam rock, part emo-tronica and all personal.

my first recorded track with my new sonic choppy toy. 4 instances of a little sample-based instrument i made in pd, based losely on the dr.rex from reason and heavily on the work of miller pucket (the core of the phase-locked vocoder pd example is what i abstracted and used as the sample playback engine)

all sequencing is the result of random-seed computations with a little guidance from yous truly. enjoy!

Medly Remix Contest

Medl is giving you a chance to make a new melody with medly. Using the great Creative Commons tools at ccMixter, we're releasing the parts from all the tracks on our album, Medly, for your mixing and mashing pleasure. Use the raw audio to come up with a new take on our track, and if we like it, we'll include it in a remix compilation.

Contest Rules:
All tracks must be submitted by June 1st through ccMixter.
Feel free to add your own stuff, but remixes should be comprised of at least 50% content from our samples.
Absolutely no samples from copyrighted material allowed in the remixes!

Woes and me

Due to a misunderstanding on my part of how the site configuration worked, I accidentally deleted about half the files on the site. Sorry to anyone who tried to check out a song, only to get a "Page not found" error. I've restored almost everything at this point and am working to get the few remaining files back in action. Vocoid on Myspace

We recently set up a Myspace page for Vocoid, so if you have a Myspace account, come be our friend!

We searched the myspace ranks for artists we liked, so if you're looking for more music, we'd recommend you check them out. Links to their projects can also be found under the Links page under the friends section. We hope that, after we're finished setting up the site, some of them will be interested in contributing new content.

We're also looking into some 3rd party solutions for digital distribution for Vocoid so new artists (and maybe some of the current ones as well) will be able to sell tracks here.

EOI updates

I've updated the EOI site with some new (old) content that was on the previous site. I added two live sets, one from the 2nd Annual Guerilla Music Fest, and the second from our show at "Under The Radar" in 26mix, SF. The 2ndAGM Fest release even includes some (oh so exciting) footage of EOI in action. Now you can (once again) hear and witness EOI, completely unedited (as opposed to mostly unedited from the album releases).

MEDL combines the forces of Squelchy and Dsl. Together they make electronica combining sequences of live jams, samples and acoustic errata.

Squelchy, a.k.a. Mike Evans, has been making music in San Francisco for the past decade - causing trouble and getting free beers as a drummer/singer/guitarist/knob-twiddler with bands like the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association (now the Society of Rockets), Vaportrail, and the Soapbox.

Dsl, a.k.a cable, a.k.a Doug Land, has been creating acoustic havok for almost as long. He's been involved in several other musical projects including The Yellow Lights of Death, pup, and most recently MEDL, as well as occasionally working on tracks of his own.

Together with Low Noise Amplifier, Evans and Land were also co-founding members of the now-defunct Engines of Innuendo, an improv electronica band which combined live instruments with laptops and synths.

Entirely conceived, composed, performed and recorded during the month of February 2008 for the RPM Challenge - "Sometime is Now" is the first full solo release from Squelchy in 6 years, and the first time he has added lyrics to his usual mix of beats and synths.

Squelchy

Squelchy is the solo project of California producer Michael Evans. Michael has spent the better parts of the past 15 years in various bands and solo projects of the indie-rock and electronic varieties, including Vaportrail, The Shimmer Kids Underpop Association, Society of Rockets, and Engines Of Innuendo. In 2009 Michael re-joined The Society of Rockets as a multi-instrumentalist, contributing his production skills to "Instant City" - a remix of the song "Plug-in City" which was released as the closing song of their new album "Future Factory". In addition to continued work with Society of Rockets and Medl, Michael is currently working on remixes for The New Slave and new music with Cubik and Origami's Matthew Kent-Stoll under the name The Pacific Satellite.

The first 2 Squelchy albums, We Want Information and the previously unreleased Truck Month All Year are now available here on Vocoid.
